Teenagers can be a challenge. They are growing at a rapid pace, have busy schedules, and often do not want to listen when you tell them to do something. This is especially true when it comes to their oral health. They might assume that since they’re nearing the end of their high school days that they’re ready to move beyond the kid-friendly dentist’s office and onto a more mature, “age-appropriate” professional. However, what they don’t know is their smiles still have much developing to do. Here are three reasons your teen should continue seeing a pediatric dentist.

Potential Orthodontics in the Future

Your teenager is still growing believe it or not, and as a result, their jaw may be unable to keep pace with the eruption of their permanent teeth. While this may not sound like a big deal, the truth is it can lead to overcrowding. It’s also possible for their teeth to become impacted because there is not enough room to push through the gum line.

A pediatric dentist will closely monitor this development to readily identify if orthodontics may be necessary at the current time or in the near future.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Most teens or young adults can expect to go through this common “rite of passage” known as wisdom teeth removal. As the third molars attempt to move into place between the ages of 17 and 25, they can become impacted if there is not enough space for them to erupt. And if they only partially push through the gum surface, they can pose an increased risk for tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.

Having a pediatric dentist examine these teeth as they attempt to come through is helpful, as early diagnosis and treatment can lower the risk of future problems in adulthood. Removing these teeth is often the recommended treatment, which can be easily done in-house if offered by the dentist or through a referral to an outside specialist.

Proper Equipping and Education

Your teenager may think they know everything but even adults don’t know all there is to know about dentistry. A pediatric dentist will be able to impart knowledge and wisdom in a way most parents cannot. While your words may fall flat because you’re their mom or dad, a dental professional can offer a unique approach that will capture their attention.

Whether it is talking to them about school, sports, or college, a pediatric dentist can equip them with the information needed to take proper care of their teeth and gums as they prepare to transition into adulthood.

You want your child to be independent but the only way you can help them get there is by ensuring they’re ready. With the help of a pediatric dentist, you can set your teen’s smile up for future success.
