As their name implies, tooth-colored fillings can blend in seamlessly with the color of the enamel that surrounds them. Their subtle appearance can allow your child to maintain confidence in their smile, even if their cavity is on a tooth that is readily visible when they open their mouth. Amalgam fillings, on the other hand, have a dark appearance that makes them easy to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tooth-Colored Fillings Require Minimal Preparation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In order for an amalgam filling to fit inside a cavity, the dentist may have to remove some healthy dentition. That is because amalgam simply sits in the spot of decay. Tooth-colored fillings, conversely, actually bond with the surrounding tissue. Therefore, they require less tooth preparation and can allow your child to maintain as much of their natural tissue as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understandably, many parents are concerned about the use of metals in restorative dental treatments. Amalgam fillings contain quite a bit of metal, so they can cause problems for individuals with certain allergies or sensitivities. Tooth-colored fillings are made out of a biocompatible resin that contains no metal at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tooth-Colored Fillings Do Not Contain Mercury<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amalgam fillings are composed of roughly 50% mercury. While dentists consider them to be safe, it is worth acknowledging that mercury is known to be a toxic material. Many parents do not want their children exposed to it at all, even in the small amounts of vapor that can get released from mercury fillings. There is absolutely no mercury in tooth-colored fillings, so families often feel safer when they choose them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tooth-Colored Fillings Cause Less Sensitivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Silver amalgam fillings can expand and contract in response to temperature changes. Not only can this cause some sensitivity and soreness, but over time, it could actually damage the surrounding tissue. Plus, the metal in amalgam fillings can conduct temperatures and irritate the sensitive inner layers of a tooth. Tooth-colored fillings do not come with such issues \u2014 they are very comfortable!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
